The Drawing Foundation: Core Curriculum Focus

In this four-week course, we treat drawing as a rigorous cognitive discipline. Rather than simply making pictures, we focus on a repeatable “System of Seeing” that allows you to translate the complex 3D world into a structured 2D image. Throughout the course, we will investigate the following academic foundations:

  • The Director’s Choice: Mastering compositional logic by using the viewfinder to frame the environment and high-speed thumbnails to resolve spatial problems before the pencil hits the final paper.
  • The Structural Skeleton: Developing precision through proportional sighting and the “locked elbow” method to map the geometry of form and the vital relationship between positive objects and negative space.
  • The Architecture of Light: Moving beyond “outlines” to understand value massing. We study how light creates 3D volume, weight, and presence through the observation of highlights and deep shadows.
  • The Final Dialogue: Refining the “Skin” of the drawing. This involves mastering line weight, edge control, and atmospheric texture to bring the work to a professional, articulated completion.

Please note: To maintain the highest standard of academic instruction, this syllabus is a living document and is subject to minor adjustments based on the specific pace, progress, and needs of the student group.
